The situation

The American Society of Breast Surgeons is a professional organization representing nearly 4,000 members across the breast care community. Its senior leadership team is highly experienced and deeply committed, with most members having served the organization for 20 years or more.

As ASBrS grew, the roles of those leaders changed. Historically, senior leaders had operated without direct staff oversight. Over several years, each had taken on supervisory responsibilities, requiring them to balance their own work with a growing responsibility for leading and developing others.

With additional growth anticipated, ASBrS saw an opportunity to strengthen the team's capabilities as people managers while helping leaders create more capacity for strategic work. The organization wanted a practical development experience that would build confidence in delegation, expectations, feedback, coaching, and other day-to-day leadership responsibilities.

What we did

Springboard designed a customized leadership development approach beginning with individual interviews with each member of the senior team. Rather than starting with a predetermined curriculum, those conversations were designed to surface leaders' actual management experiences, challenges, strengths, and development priorities.

The findings informed a Leadership Development Roadmap tailored to the team. The roadmap connected individual development with broader organizational needs, including stronger people management, greater consistency in supervisory practices, and the ability to balance operational responsibilities with the strategic demands of a growing organization.

The experience combined group development with individual executive coaching. Each senior leader was paired with a coach, creating space to work through individual challenges and apply new skills to real situations. Group sessions provided opportunities for peer learning, shared problem-solving, and greater consistency in how leaders approached management across the organization.

Springboard also incorporated practical tools and resources leaders could continue using for one-on-one meetings, delegation, and performance check-ins after the formal engagement.

What changed

The engagement created a structured approach for helping a highly experienced senior team continue evolving from accomplished functional leaders into more confident and consistent people managers.

By connecting individual coaching with shared leadership development, ASBrS established a framework for strengthening leadership capability while preparing its senior team for the organization's continued growth.

Just as importantly, the work was grounded in the challenges leaders were actually experiencing. Rather than providing off-the-shelf leadership training, Springboard built the development experience around the team, its culture, and the leadership capabilities ASBrS identified as important for what comes next.
