The situation

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) provides a broad range of professional development opportunities for industrial hygiene professionals, including eLearning, certificate programs, instructor-led education, and learning publications. Its educational portfolio is supported by a complex competency model and multiple Bodies of Knowledge that define what professionals need to know and be able to do.

As the profession and the needs of its members continued to evolve, AIHA wanted to take a more comprehensive look at how its education aligned with those frameworks. The organization needed to understand where its existing programming was strong, where important knowledge or skill gaps existed, and where future investment in education could have the greatest impact.

AIHA engaged Springboard to help connect those pieces and develop a clear, prioritized roadmap for the future.

What we did

Springboard began by reviewing AIHA's existing data, curricula, competency model, and Body of Knowledge documentation to establish a clear picture of the current state. Rather than evaluating individual courses in isolation, we looked across the educational portfolio to understand how well it supported the knowledge and capabilities professionals need throughout their careers.

Subject matter expertise was critical to the work. Springboard facilitated targeted interviews and working sessions with AIHA-selected experts to identify critical knowledge domains, explore emerging skill needs, and ensure that the Body of Knowledge reflected the realities of professional practice. We also managed the SME process through clear expectations, structured touchpoints, and ongoing coordination to keep a complex initiative moving forward.

To ensure the work reflected the broader profession, not simply the perspectives of a small group of experts, Springboard designed and administered a survey to more than 6,000 AIHA members. The research gathered quantitative and qualitative input from professionals across different experience levels, sectors, and roles.

We then brought those different sources of information together to identify and organize key knowledge domains, clarify priority skills and competencies within each domain, and identify gaps in AIHA's existing educational programming.

From Research to a Practical Roadmap

The goal was not simply to produce an assessment. AIHA needed the findings translated into decisions about what to do next.

Springboard developed a prioritized Education Roadmap that connected identified needs and gaps with specific potential learning solutions, including eLearning, instructor-led courses, certificates, microlearning, and other educational resources. This gave AIHA a practical framework for determining where to focus future development and investment.

We also created a visual Industrial Hygiene Education Journey illustrating how professionals could progress from foundational knowledge toward more advanced competencies. The journey incorporated both technical expertise and essential professional skills, helping AIHA see its educational offerings as an interconnected learning experience rather than a collection of individual programs.

Throughout the engagement, Springboard worked as an extension of AIHA's internal team, bringing instructional design expertise, structured analysis, stakeholder engagement, and project management while integrating with AIHA's existing staff and processes.

What changed

The work gave AIHA a more coherent, Body of Knowledge-aligned education ecosystem and a data-informed roadmap for future programming. It strengthened the connection between AIHA's competencies, professional knowledge requirements, and educational offerings while providing a clearer framework for prioritizing future learning investments.

Just as importantly, the engagement reflects the kind of relationship Springboard seeks to build with its clients. AIHA has continued to partner with Springboard across multiple learning initiatives, using our team to add specialized expertise and capacity when needed.

Because of our partnership with Springboard, we have access to instructional designers and top-notch learning professionals who extend our internal team and can help us complete projects that we can't do internally—on time and always on budget. Their work is exceptional and can be seamlessly integrated into our internal work.
