The situation

The Amputee Coalition is a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting people living with limb loss and limb difference through education, advocacy, and support. Over the past five years, the organization has experienced significant growth and change, evolving its leadership, priorities, and approach to advancing its mission.

Throughout that period, the Coalition has needed to maintain momentum around its mission and strategic priorities while helping its Board, senior leaders, and staff navigate changing leadership and organizational needs. Rather than approaching these needs as isolated projects, the Amputee Coalition has repeatedly partnered with Springboard for strategic planning, leadership and team development, executive coaching, Board development, and retreat facilitation.

That continuity has allowed Springboard to develop a deep understanding of the organization while adapting our support as its leadership, priorities, and needs have evolved.

What we did

One of the most significant engagements in the partnership was the development of the Amputee Coalition's 2024–2029 Strategic Plan. Rather than beginning with another extensive discovery process, Springboard synthesized the substantial stakeholder research the Coalition had already collected through surveys, community reports, and grant-related studies. We used that existing knowledge as the foundation for planning, respecting the work that had already been done while helping leadership translate it into strategic direction.

Springboard facilitated the leadership team's work to establish Education, Advocacy, and Support as the three organizational pillars of the plan. Through collaborative planning sessions, the team developed outcomes and strategies for each pillar and identified six organizational goals supported by measurable 12-month actions. Board feedback and staff-wide input were incorporated into the process to build broader understanding and ownership of the plan.

We also focused on what would happen after the plan was completed. Springboard introduced practical tools including a Goal Planning Sheet, Strategic Planning Scorecard, and Strategy Screen to help leaders monitor progress, maintain accountability, and evaluate emerging opportunities against established priorities.

Supporting Leaders and Teams Through Change

As the organization experienced leadership transitions, Springboard's role expanded beyond strategy. Because we already understood the Coalition's mission, people, history, and strategic direction, we were able to provide continuity while tailoring our work to the needs of different leaders and teams.

Springboard worked with senior leaders through leadership development and group coaching tied directly to situations they were navigating in their work. This included recurring coaching sessions collaboratively designed around areas where leaders needed support, along with DiSC assessments and a team profile to strengthen understanding of team dynamics.

Additional leadership development work focused on establishing team purpose and norms, defining guiding principles and expected behaviors, and coaching the leadership team through its regular meetings.

Springboard has also provided individual executive coaching and facilitated leadership retreats at important points in the Coalition's evolution, creating space for leaders to address immediate priorities while strengthening how they worked together.

Strengthening Board Governance

Our work has also extended to the Board, particularly as leadership changes created new opportunities to clarify how the Board, CEO, and senior staff work together.

Springboard conducted individual interviews with Board members and senior staff to understand different perspectives, identify areas of alignment, and surface differences in expectations. We used those insights to design a Board development session focused on strengthening communication, clarifying roles and responsibilities, examining how the Board works with and supports the CEO and staff, and co-creating a Board Charter establishing clearer behavioral norms and healthy governance practices.

What changed

The strategic planning work gave the Amputee Coalition a five-year framework built around three clear pillars, six organizational goals, and practical mechanisms for translating strategy into action and measuring progress. It also created meaningful opportunities for Board and staff input and alignment around the organization's direction.

The broader impact, however, is reflected in the continuity of the partnership. Through periods of leadership transition and changing organizational needs, the Amputee Coalition has continued to turn to Springboard for support. Our work has evolved from strategic planning to leadership development, executive coaching, team effectiveness, Board governance, and retreat facilitation.

Because each engagement builds on what came before it, Springboard does not have to start from scratch when a new need or leadership transition arises. We bring an understanding of the Coalition's mission, history, strategic direction, and organizational context while helping its leaders and Board determine what the organization needs next.

90% of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals.
